Vern and his business partner and wife, Lisa, started A-Best as an off-shoot of A-Plus Sew & Vac in Owatonna, MN, run by Vern’s parents, Byron and Janet Hanson. After buying A-Plus in 2009, the sewing super center in Albert Lea grew to absorb the Owatonna location caring for customers across the upper Midwest. What in the early years was a true family business, with most of the couple’s eight children working in the business at some point, is now a team of more than 10 local professionals(several with family ties).
In a state where fishing, boating and hunting dominate the outdoor hobby market, A-Best’s sewing enthusiasts engage in quilting, embroidery and all varieties of sewing hobbies with equal passion.“Sewing is a big industry–it’s a hobby that continues to grow,” says owner, Vern Hanson. “The average sewist today doesn’t just have one sewing machine … they have several, and they want to spend time with their friends and family pursuing this passion. At A-Best, we are privileged to provide the venue for them to enjoy their hobby.”
